Recently I went on Oakland University's Alternative Spring Break trip to Alabama. Alabama was hit with a series of tornados and a group of 40 students went over there to help. My roommate and I volunteered together in hopes of helping others and letting them know that other people care. The bus ride was around 15 hours total and broke down on the highway about an hour before we arrived. The bus driver was able to figure out the bus was over heated and 20 water bottles later we were able to make it to a gas station to fix the problem, wew! During the trip we stayed at a Boy Scout Camp, which was built in the 1940’s, so it was a lot like camping. Our work sites throughout the week were definitely enduring, physically and emotionally. We usually traveled about an hour in the mornings to get to the cities where our work sites were located.
A lot of our work sites included sorting to find personal items and cleaning up debris, which ranged from toilets, trees, and parts of the houses. One of the house owners was named Glenda and the only thing left of her house was the foundation and debris. Our group was able to clean up the entire area for her in just one day! Another site we went to was a burnt house and we had to go into it and clean it out and work on the outside cleaning up the garbage. I’m really glad I went on this trip because I made a lot of new friendships and we were able to help others and lessen their burdens. Overall, the trip was a great learning experience and I would love to go again next year.
Here's a video one of the girls made from the trip, Enjoy!
That sounds like a really cool trip & its definitely something that not everyone gets to do. I would love to do something like that. I'm sure you learned a lot on your trip & your help was well appreciated by the people whose homes were destroyed by those tornadoes. That had to have been an extremely difficult time for them, but all that help showed them that there are still people who care.
ReplyDeleteI love that you're engaged to your high school sweetheart. That is so sweet. My sister is getting married this summer and I have had so much fun helping her plan the wedding, and it's great because I don't have to pay for any of it ;-) happy planning!
ReplyDeleteHi Koren! First off, congratulations on being engaged! Sounds like a real love story....and second, what a wonderful thing you did for your spring break! From the video and your description, it sounds like you guys make all the difference and had tons of fun at the same time! I would love to travel and help for disaster relief myself. Thanks for sharing about yourself! Gina

ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your engagement! I married my high school sweetheart 19 years ago. Remember that both of you are always changing and growing. Take the time to make sure you always have time for each other.
Good Luck!
Tina
It is so amazing that you took the time out of your life to go help other people that you don't even know. I have gone on mission trips with my church to West Virginia and North Carolina to do the same thing so I know what a life changing experience it is. I'm sure the people you helped really appreciated it!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a really amazing experience! That's really awesome that you decided to do something so selfless for those in Alabama.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the engagement! I, too, am still dating my high school sweetheart! We've been dating 4 and 1/2 years. I feel like there are a lot of people that I have met in this program that are still dating their high school sweethearts, as well!
Wow! what an amazing experience that must have been. I commend you so much for participating in the Alternative spring break trip.
ReplyDeleteAlso, congratulations on being engaged and making a relationship work out so well!
I remember when those storms and tornadoes struck through Alabama. I think you should be proud for helping out when it was highly needed.
ReplyDeleteThat's lovely you and you fiance dated 6 years and now are engaged! Congrats :)
ReplyDeleteThat is so wonderful that you are still with your high school sweetheart. Congratulations! That is great that you were able to help so many people during your trip as well.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to go on this trip, but unfortunately with my new job I am not allowed to take time off. I am so glad that you were all able to help out so many families. That is such an amazing thing that you did :)
ReplyDeleteAwww I went on Alternative Spring Break last year! I had a blast and just couldn't do it with work and everything else this year. We worked at South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind. I had a blast and I'm glad you got to have that opportunity.. you meet really awesome people on the trip that have overcome a lot.
ReplyDeleteI want to do something like this because I love helping others too! I know going to places and helping people less fortunate than you definitely helps you appreciate the things you have in your own life!
ReplyDeleteKoren that was so wonderful of you to help like that. After the storm is always the hardest part. Picking up and moving on. I am glad you got to experience that!
ReplyDeleteKoren, congratulations on being engaged to your sweetheart. I am engaged as well to my best friend. Wish you the best with your fiance and life in general! :)
ReplyDeleteFirst thing, congrats on your engagement! that is amazing. :) Second: your trip sounded absolutely amazing. How does one get involved with that sort of thing? is it through your sorority or something else? I have friends that go to Grand Valley and they always go on an alternate spring break trips. I've always wanted to do something like that because I've always been big on helping others that need it the most. Until today I didn't realize that OU does them too! I would love to know how to get involved!
ReplyDeleteHi Rachel! The CSA office downstairs in the OC has all the information you'll need. Jennifer Richardson and Connie Farlow were the ones in charge for my trip, however they may be graduating this year and new officers will take their places! The program is called Alternative Spring Break and I believe they will have 4 different trips to choose from next year, but I'm not sure if they've started planning for them. They usually post the information in the beginning of Fall semester so keep your eyes open then! It was a great experience and the people that go on them are awesome.
DeleteKoren, congrats on the engagement. Me and my girlfriend are also high school sweethearts! Glad to know another couple has made it this far and further! How cool!
